Piano Lessons

Philosophy

Having earned my graduate degrees from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, I’ve been fortunate to garner college teaching experience at both the University of Notre Dame and Knox College, while simultaneously offering private instruction to talented students for over twenty years. I have worked with young beginners, high school competitors in local and national competitions, advanced college students, and adult students who love to play the piano for pure enjoyment!

I believe it is important to foster a sense of independence in each student. For beginners this includes teaching them how to read and learn music independently early in their studies so they can move forward with new pieces on a regular basis. As students advance, it necessitates a commitment to working with them on the more intricate technical skills they need to play with ease and fluidity and to practice effectively on their own. While not adhering to any one “school” of piano playing, I always prioritize the release of tension to prevent hand and arm injuries that can occur from the repetitive motion of extensive practice. The aim is always for music making to be an enjoyable experience, expressive for the audience and “easy” for the performer.

Benjamin Franklin once said “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” By incorporating many facets of musical instruction into the study of piano and musical collaboration, I hope that I will facilitate each student’s individual success and instill in them an awareness of the opportunities and excitement that can come from a career as a pianist.
