As newly composed music becomes increasingly more complex with regards to the collaborative component, it’s become advantageous for every soloist to build an enduring and enjoyable relationship with a pianist. From tours, to recording projects, to competitions and conferences, having a pianist who makes the performance experience easier is a luxury for everyone!

I’ve found that soloists programming a full recital of music with piano, particularly music that doesn’t fall within the normally proscribed “standard” repertoire, are increasingly looking to travel with a pianist who is dedicated to the success of their program. Often, these tours are a direct outgrowth of new music commissions and album recording projects – even better to be able to present your album with the pianist who recorded it! The flexibility of booking several performances in a short window of time can make the tour more financially viable, while helping to keep the recital experience both stress-free and musically enriching.

Having presented new works at conventions such as NASA, ITEC, NFA, IDRS, and WSC through the years, I’ve come to see first-hand the immense value of being able to prepare these performances with one pianist. The interpersonal and long-term connections that develop and the ease of planning a diverse and engaging program make these moments a rewarding experience for everyone involved!
